To generate a Canvas QTI Quiz using Brisk:
- Open the Brisk Teaching Chrome Extension and click on Create, then select Quiz.
- You will see a document type icon next to the language dropdown menu. Click on it and switch the output to Canvas QTI.
- Fill in your quiz details (topic, grade level, number of questions, etc.) and generate your quiz.
- Brisk will show you a text box with the generated quiz. You can edit the questions here before downloading. Please note:
- Make sure each question keeps the multiple choice format.
- The correct answer for each question must have an asterisk (*) at the beginning of the line. Do not remove these asterisks, or Canvas will not know which answers are correct.
- When you are happy with your quiz, click the Download for Canvas button. The file will be saved to your computer.
Important: Do not unzip or extract this file after downloading. Canvas needs the file to stay as a .zip.
Troubleshooting Tips:
-
"Question must specify a correct choice" error: Check that every question has a correct answer marked. The correct answer must have an asterisk (
*) at the very beginning of the line. For example:- ✅ Correct:
*b) George Washington - ❌ Wrong:
b) George Washington(missing the asterisk)
- ✅ Correct:
-
"Question type does not support short answer" error: This usually means there are extra blank lines or spaces in your quiz text. Go back to Brisk and check for:
- Blank lines between a question and its answer options — remove any gaps so the answers appear directly below the question.
- A space between the asterisk and the answer text — the asterisk should be right next to the first letter with no space (e.g.,
*b) George Washington, not* b) George Washington).
To import the quiz to Canvas:
- Open your web browser and log in to Canvas.
- Open the course you want to add the quiz to.
- In the left-hand menu, click Settings (near the bottom).
- On the Settings page, click Import Course Content (on the right side of the page).
- Under Content Type, click the dropdown menu and select QTI .zip file.
- Click Choose File (or Browse), then find and select the .zip file on your computer.
- You will see an option to select a Question Bank. You can either:
- Choose an existing question bank from the dropdown, or
- Leave it set to create a new question bank (recommended if this is your first import).
- Click the blue Import button.
- A progress bar will appear. Wait for the import to finish — this may take a moment depending on the size of your file. You will see a green checkmark or a "Completed" message when it is done.
Important: If you see a checkbox for "New Quizzes," leave it unchecked unless your school specifically uses New Quizzes.
Troubleshooting Tips:
- "Import failed" error: Make sure your file is a .zip file and that you did not unzip it before uploading. The file must remain zipped.
- Can't find your imported questions: After import, look under Quizzes → Manage Question Banks (via the three-dot menu on the Quizzes page). Your imported bank should appear there.
