Brisk connects with Google Classroom in a few specific ways.
- You can import student work from a Classroom assignment into Batch Feedback
- When your district enables it, students can turn in Brisk Writing Coach Google Docs through Classroom.
- Brisk does not roster from Google Classroom or send grades back to it.
This article covers what works, how to do it, and what isn't supported.
Import student work for Batch Feedback
Importing files for Batch Feedback is the main way Brisk works with Google Classroom. You pull a folder of student submissions from a Classroom assignment and generate feedback on all of them at once.
-
Open Batch Feedback — On the Brisk website, click the Batch Feedback tab. (Or From the Brisk extension’s menu: click Give Feedback, then Batch Feedback.)
-
Import from Classroom — Click Import Student Work, then Google Classroom.
-
Select your class and assignment — Choose the Google Classroom class and assignment. Each Brisk class links to one Classroom class, so if you see a class is “already associated,” you’ll need to disconnect the old link first — see Connect, disconnect, or reconnect a Google Classroom class below.
-
Set up the assignment — Name the assignment, choose a feedback style, and add your focus, grade level, standards, and rubric as needed.
-
Generate feedback — Click Create Assignment. You don't need to stay on the page while feedback generates.
-
Review and share — Open each submission to review the feedback, then Insert Feedback into the student's Google Doc or Slides, or use the share link to send it. Feedback is not posted into Google Classroom automatically.
Supported file types: Google Docs, Google Slides, images (JPG, PNG, WebP), PDFs, and .docx (only when selected from Google Drive). Feedback can be inserted directly into Google Docs and Slides only.
Connect, disconnect, or reconnect a Google Classroom class
Each Brisk class links to one Google Classroom class. You connect a class inside the Batch Feedback flow, but you disconnect it from the Manage Classes page. If a Brisk class is already linked, you’ll see it’s “already associated” — disconnect the old link first, then reconnect.
You’ll usually need to do this at the start of a new year or semester: if you connected a class last year, that link stays in place and can block the new Google Classroom class, so you’ll need to disconnect and reconnect.
To disconnect a class
- From Brisk Next, click your name in the bottom-left corner and select Manage Classes.
- On the Manage Classes page, click the three dots (⋮) next to the class you want to disconnect. (The ⋮ is in the rightmost column — if you don’t see it, scroll the table to the right.)
- Select Disconnect Google Classroom and confirm when prompted.
To reconnect a Google Classroom class
- From Brisk Next, select Batch Feedback.
- Click Import Student Work.
- Select From Google Classroom.
- Select your class and assignment.
If you use rostering: Rostered classes (ClassLink, Clever, CSV) appear in Brisk automatically, but their Google Classroom link is not automatic. Brisk doesn’t roster or sync any data from Google Classroom, so you still need to manually connect each rostered class to the relevant Google Classroom class using the steps above.
Submit Writing Coach work through Google Classroom
Writing Coach Boost Student activities open in a Google Doc that is owned by the teacher, so by default a student can't turn it in through Google Classroom — Google Classroom blocks submission when the student isn't the document owner.
Brisk offers an optional setting that transfers the doc to the student so they can submit it. It is off by default.
To enable it (admins): Contact your Brisk customer success manager or reach out to hello@briskteaching.com. Your district must use Google Workspace for Education, and your Google admin must allow document ownership to transfer between users.Learn more in our article: Google Doc Ownership Transfer Setup for IT Admins
To turn in work once enabled (students):
- Finish the work in the Writing Coach Google Doc.
- Open the assignment in Google Classroom. The teacher must post it as an Assignment, not as Material.
- Under Your work, click + Add or create, then Google Drive, and select the doc.
- Click Add, then Turn in.
If direct submission isn't enabled: The student can make their own copy (File, then Make a copy) and submit the copy. A copy does not keep the original revision history, and Inspect Writing does not work on a copied doc.
Share Boost Student activities in Google Classroom
Boost Student activities (including Writing Coach) don't post to Google Classroom directly. To assign one, create the activity in Brisk, then share its link or QR code by posting it in your Google Classroom yourself.
What Brisk doesn't do with Google Classroom
-
No grade or score passback. Google Classroom doesn't support sending grades back from Brisk. Scores appear inside the student's doc. To move scores into a gradebook, use the CSV download.
-
Feedback isn't posted into Google Classroom. Use Insert Feedback or the share link to get feedback to students.
- No rostering from Google Classroom. Google Classroom classes are used only for importing work into Batch Feedback. They don't appear as classes for Boost activities, which use your rostered or manually created Brisk classes.
